Well underway

Well after my brief panic over how uninspired I had been at the beginning of this project I am now really into it. I have realised that draping is actually quite fun although I still enjoy flat pattern cutting a lot more.

As we have to make an outfit I though I would push the boat out and go for 3 pieces! I am making a Cape, Shirt and Shorts. The cape and shorts were pretty easy to drape and pattern cut with only minimal changes to patterns after I toiled them. The shirt however has been the bane of my life the past couple of weeks! 5 toiles later and it finally is working :D

I went fabric shopping on Saturday and managed to get everything I needed for a lot less then I though considering I went to Berwick Street which normally is very over priced although the fabric is good quality.

So now I have till the end of the week to make up my final garments which I think I will be able to do.

Here is the page from my portfolio work of the outfit I'm making

I will hopefully post again tomorrow with progress on my outfit :D

Contour and Draping

Last week I had my first lessons in contour and draping and I really enjoyed both techniques. The basics of contour are really simple and its possible to create really interesting skin tight shapes. In the morning we had to work on womenswear stands just to learn the principle and I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually do as I am a menswear designer. In the afternoon we had to find an image of a contour garment to copy onto the stand and I decided to get a menswear item

I got the shape from a menswear hoody image that I found and I think it would really work in a t-shirt.

We then moved onto draping on Friday and I was dreading this! We were told to use 1 meter of calico and just play around on the stand. It took me a little while to get into it but after a while I started to really enjoy the process and I'm really happy with the shape I created

I really like the mixture of the draped front with the structured pleated back. I was a bit dubious when I started out but I realised that draping isn't all greek goddess dresses, its just the idea of putting fabric on the body.

I hope to be able to experiment more with these techniques next week when I have to start coming up with ideas for my outfit.

all change

Well I have completely changed my concept for my draping project! I am now going to base it on the work of Hannah Stouffer

I adore this image and especially the colours, more of her work can be seen at http://www.hannahstouffer.com/home.html

I am off to uni to learn about Contour today so hopefully it will be interesting :D

lets see how this goes...

I have tried to start blogs before and have not done very well so lets see if this one works!

I am currently pretty stuck for inspiration for my new project at uni with involves draping directly onto the stand. I keep getting images of greek and roman statues with flowing gowns but as i do menswear i want it to be harder than that.

really stuck...

contemplating basing it on the art of Alex Hohlov

i love the use of colour and shape in his work http://www.alexhohlov.com/

lets see what happens...
